Apprenticeships

INTRODUCTION
WOI provides an alternative provision to those who are NEET, disadvantaged and/or to those whose needs are not sufficiently met by current mainstream education. Our programmes offer young people a choice of learning pathways ­ Sports & Leisure; Music & Media; Technology & Environment; Business & Enterprise.
 
People gain both vocational and functional skills (literacy & ICT) along with the knowledge and attitude needed to progress in life and the workplace. We engage people through their interest in their chosen subject (e.g. sport) and use this as a medium to train, motivate and focus them. Participants are trained in groups of 10 people, learning through project based activities with real outcomes, whilst developing accredited skills. The project develops study skills and introduces participants to professional work practices, promotes the attainment of skills & qualifications and provides the initial steps in a career path.
 
Our approach to learning is one of empowerment - equipping learners with the tools they need to acquire knowledge, develop skills and abilities. Learning within the following areas: basic skills, personal learning or thinking
skills, principle or applied learning (subject specific), employability and work/project-based learning. Learning will involve experiential activity and a variety of teaching techniques such as tutorials, seminars, research, the
keeping of logs/diaries, building portfolios, Œfieldwork¹, self-guided work, written reports, use of audio or video, practical exercises,  guest speakers, class discussions, e-learning, etc. This rich and varied learning environment will balance Œclassroom teaching¹ time against, assessments/time devoted to accredited courses, along with enrichment and other essential learning (e.g. basic skills). This will help to ensure that our learners leave us as well-rounded individuals, able to transfer their learning to any future endeavors, whether it is study, employment or business.
 
All learners benefit from key work support that helps them to identify their next destination and support their sustained progression. Learners progress on to the appropriate vocational courses with local FE providers, apprenticeships, employment or volunteering.
